I’ll believe it when I see it.
I’ve tried “downloading” albums for long flights, only to have them completely fail to play.

I usually go with hayberry fields.
- Comment on How come LED Light Bulbs only last for about 2-3 Years? 1 month ago:
Phillips warm glow are my favorites after watching technology connections. They last, and they look just like incandescent bulbs as you dim them.
- Comment on I don't know the difference between hay and straw 1 month ago:
Call me a hippie all you want, but I usually go back to Pink Floyd lyrics when I get confused which one to use.
“Straw you, out there in the cold…” Just doesn’t sound right.
- Comment on Men: What sequence do you fellow to dry your body off after showering or bathing? 1 month ago:
Me neither. They dry themselves by the time they need clothes.
- Comment on American tourists visiting the EU, what do you think of it? 2 months ago:
Certainly. Germany is an extreme example.
- Comment on American tourists visiting the EU, what do you think of it? 2 months ago:
I’m from California, been on various trips around Spain, and France, with under a week spent in both Italy and Switzerland.
I love everywhere I’ve been. I’d be happy to live somewhere in western Europe.
I don’t know if European healthcare is better, but it’s far more civilized in its availability. I haven’t seen much difference between EU and USA for equivalent-quality grocery prices, with the exception of Zurich. I’ve found Europe to be generally safe. There seems to be more “sneaky” crime, whereas the States has more confrontational crime.
Freeway etiquette is far better in France and Spain than California. Trains, of course, are better too.
One major difference is labor laws. The EU has far more protection, but far less mobility. I remember telling a German friend that I had gotten a new job operating a fairly large power system, after working in a tangentially related field, without any additional study or licenses, and his response was “Only in America!” I hadn’t even considered that this move would be far more difficult in other countries.
- Comment on How do you ask for a haircut? 2 months ago:
You think that’s hard?
Last year my dentist/denturist asked my what I wanted my teeth to look like!
It was unreal, trying to develop an aesthetic preference for teeth. It was actually quite eye-opening. I did find that I had a very strong opinion about it. I haven’t quite gotten to the end product, but I now know what I want.
I recommend photos, but also to be careful in explaining what you like about the photo. It’s easy to latch on to one aspect of a style, not realizing that an attempt to reproduce other aspects might end up completely ignoring what drew you to it in the first place.

- Comment on "REM sleep is the next AI" 2 months ago:
It just occurred to me how similar AI images are to dreams, always related to the prompt, but never quite how a conscious brain would imagine it. All the weird, illegible text, the grotesque bodies, etc. really do match up fairly well with unconsciousness.

Honestly, how to evaluate stocks for my first individual share purchases. I’ve only ever had more-or-less passive funds investments.
It’s all a bit overwhelming.

I’ve always taken life as it came, never had a goal like being a (professional?) pianist. I’m not entirely sure what that means in this day, either.
Even if you stick with regular work, make sure you keep a list of everything you could theoretically call yourself proficient at doing. These skills can often be rallied into promotions and career changes later on, if you need to move or advance.
I’ve sold a lot of pianos from my time in estate liquidation and I do know that the inconvenience of moving them means that used pianos are often sold for essentially nothing. There just isn’t an active market for anything but the absolute best instruments. If you need an inexpensive piano, they’re out there. The best strategy is to have a piano mover on your phone. If you show up to someone’s house and tell them you can have it out on Tuesday, they’re often going to be happy to see it go.

- Comment on How do sport shooter bring their gear to international events ? 3 months ago:
Hunters fly with firearms sometimes. It just depends on the customs regulations. I’ve seen it at the airport. You check the bag and declare it. I’m sure there’s some amount of paperwork, depending on the country.

If that were the case, there wouldn’t be an application and interview process.
There are often multiple candidates for a given position.
- Comment on Survey shows most people wouldn't pay extra for AI-enhanced hardware | 84% of people said no 4 months ago:
I honestly have no Idea what AI does to a processor, and would therefore not pay extra for the badge.
If it provided a significant speed improvement or something, then yeah, sure. Nobody has really communicated to me what the benefit is. It all seems like hand waving.
- Comment on "Fry" is an ambiguous word in English 4 months ago:
With sautéeing, the heat is being transferred from the pan to the food, with the thin layer of oil serving to increase the contact area and prevent sticking. It’s a low-fat cooking method.
With pan frying, it’s the hot oil that’s doing the cooking, with the pan heating the oil, not the food directly.

A lot of the law related words are from French derivations AFAIK?
Yeah, those legal terms have been more-or-less common to any romance language I’ve used.

I’m not a contractor.
I’d poke around for rot and mark the edges to make sure it isn’t spreading. Maybe try to get up there and check after a storm.
It could absolutely be an old problem that stained the wood. I might make a 1-year calendar reminder if I didn’t see anything after a rain.
- Comment on We keep measuring everything's value with something that continuously loses value over time 6 months ago:
Honestly? Sometimes my brain just runs with stuff like this. Having travelled enough, it gets really fascinating, what’s expensive where and why. A universal value metric would be about as useful to me as the Kelvin scale is. It’s nice to have it as a thought tool, but it’s not particularly useful day-to-day.
- Comment on We keep measuring everything's value with something that continuously loses value over time 6 months ago:
I get it, and I wish there was a more stable way to measure value internationally. Not for trade or anything, just a baseline. Something along the line of total global money value / total supply.
I’ve only thought about it casually, but everything I’ve come up with makes the concept more complicated. It spirals pretty quickly. Value in what? Gold? (no). Watt-hours? Who’s energy?
I’m sure someone with an economics degree has gone absolutely nuts trying to figure something out. I’d be very interested to learn more.

- Comment on Why do Americans measure everything in cups? 7 months ago:
If you get into baking bread, you buy a scale. It doesn’t change the problem with volume vs weight, because American flour is sold in pounds, and the recipes are all in grams or bakers ratios.
What it does help with (in bread baking) is consistently and speed. It’s much faster to dump 500g of flour in a bowl than to measure out that many cups.
For almost everything else, cups are faster and easier.
