I’m sure the French will appreciate what is done to their language by this project lol.
- Comment on Is this discoloration a problem? 2 weeks ago:
I’m not a contractor.
I’d poke around for rot and mark the edges to make sure it isn’t spreading. Maybe try to get up there and check after a storm.
It could absolutely be an old problem that stained the wood. I might make a 1-year calendar reminder if I didn’t see anything after a rain.
- Comment on We keep measuring everything's value with something that continuously loses value over time 2 weeks ago:
Honestly? Sometimes my brain just runs with stuff like this. Having travelled enough, it gets really fascinating, what’s expensive where and why. A universal value metric would be about as useful to me as the Kelvin scale is. It’s nice to have it as a thought tool, but it’s not particularly useful day-to-day.
- Comment on We keep measuring everything's value with something that continuously loses value over time 2 weeks ago:
I get it, and I wish there was a more stable way to measure value internationally. Not for trade or anything, just a baseline. Something along the line of total global money value / total supply.
I’ve only thought about it casually, but everything I’ve come up with makes the concept more complicated. It spirals pretty quickly. Value in what? Gold? (no). Watt-hours? Who’s energy?
I’m sure someone with an economics degree has gone absolutely nuts trying to figure something out. I’d be very interested to learn more.

- Comment on Why do Americans measure everything in cups? 5 weeks ago:
If you get into baking bread, you buy a scale. It doesn’t change the problem with volume vs weight, because American flour is sold in pounds, and the recipes are all in grams or bakers ratios.
What it does help with (in bread baking) is consistently and speed. It’s much faster to dump 500g of flour in a bowl than to measure out that many cups.
For almost everything else, cups are faster and easier.
- Comment on Why do Americans measure everything in cups? 5 weeks ago:
We have measuring cups, along with similarly standardized spoons and liquid cups same measurement just a different form factor.
Everyone who cooks has at least one set. I literally never had (nor needed) a scale in the kitchen until I started baking, in my forties.
- Comment on Why is "Dear X" considered more formal than "To X" in e-mail/writing? 5 weeks ago:
For me, the first 4 lines go on the bottom, with the signature.
One of my managers cold-starts his emails with Name,. That’s a little too dry for my style, but obviously Dear is far too mushy. I stick with Hi, Hello, Hey, or Greetings, depending on the context.
- Comment on More and more people are ditching carrier roaming in favor of travel eSIMs 5 weeks ago:
I’m in Chile right now. I have a local phone number and 20 gb for 30 days. eSIMs are amazing. I paid by at least 4x, getting Movistar through an app before I left, but my phone worked on the tarmac and I got to spend my first day exploring, rather than looking for a mobile shop.

Same. I just stick with #2 on my trimmer. Lasts a few weeks before it’s intolerably messy.

They don’t even need that. They’d just use shell companies.

Yeah, probably better to limit the numbers, rather than increase the price.

As someone who has only dipped his toe into this tech, and into podcasts, for that matter, what’s the best android app to use for this?
I don’t really want to use Spotify, etc. Is there a preferred independent and/or FOSS that people like?

Good catch lol. I’m trying to picture a 2600 passenger bus. That’s more than any train I’ve ever been on. It would have to be the size of an ocean liner.

You get “regards” “best regards” or if we do a lot of work together, " best," from me. I’ll usually express any gratitude on a separate line.
Thank you for all the work you put into this thread, OP!

- Comment on How Can I Make this Legless Bed Rise 2-inches? 5 months ago:
Already commented about raising the bed. Here’s another idea.
Remove the top of the desk from the bottom and rotate it 180°, then reinsert. Put a heavy weight on the foot to stabilize, then cantelever the desk out over the bed.
- Comment on How Can I Make this Legless Bed Rise 2-inches? 5 months ago:
To get that thing under the platform, you’re going to need to add stubby legs like the ones on a stuffed chair, unless you want it to look like a dorm room with sticks or bricks. At a guess, I’d say you’ll need 1 leg for every 2-3 linear feet that the bed contacts the ground. Don’t forget the center support.
Platform beds aren’t designed to have legs, so you’ll need significantly more legs than a framed bed would have. You’ve got to spread the additional stresses evenly or it’ll all loosen. It’ll start creaking and the drawers will get stuck with too few supports.

- Comment on Whats the difference between cheap and expensive modern TVs? 5 months ago:
My primary concern buying a TV would be UX. If the menu system is well thought out and they’re not spamming the user with advertising, it’s probably a good indicator that they’re investing in good hardware too.
Not that I wouldn’t totally geek out for weeks watching reviews and learning all the minutiae of light levels and color accuracy before pulling the trigger. The research is half the fun.
- Comment on Behold The Hyundai Uni Wheel. Transportation May Never Be The Same 5 months ago:
I’d be concerned with the amount of unsprung weight this adds, too. You’re basically taking the transmission and adding that mass to the hub. Seems like it would be pretty crashy on rough surfaces.
