Makes sense. I approached it of less than an article and more of a list of definitions. But yeah, the definitions weren’t good and I found myself wishing for better explanations.
I’m pretty ignorant on all of the definitions though, so I did bookmark it to peruse again later.

I can ssh into the APs, although I’m not sure about configuring them independent of a controller as I haven’t tried. I use a free google cloud tier to host the controller, which can be managed via web gui and phone app. It may use some Java elements in the controller but it wasn’t hard to set up.

Anecdotal but I don’t know anyone, including old people who don’t use Adblock. Sure I installed it for half of the ones I know, but the others found it all on its own. The ads are just insanely disruptive so one could see why it would happen naturally.
