And regarding experiences, most towns are older than America. Where I live they recently celebrated 800 years of age. There’s a lot of history to explore.
It would probably be better to get experience ideas from your daughter, since the area will be oozing with history and things to see.

I live in Germany, if you have a specific question I can try to answer.
In general there are a lot of stereotypes about Germans, but most of them aren’t correct.
- Germans are efficient. Nope.
- Germans have no humour. Nope.
- Germans are unfriendly. Nope.
- Trains are on time. Nope.
Some are slow to warm up to strangers.
Many places only take cash still, though that is slowly getting better.
People do stare, not sure if that is specifically a German thing.
One thing that might be useful for you to know, coming from America. Many Germans get irritated by stereotypical American over sharing.
Be prepared to have your opinions on Trump probed.

Usually when you hear the typical ice cream truck songs in Germany, it’s a dude rolling around looking for old metal.

That’s always a danger.
You could host the server on its own vlan and use tailscale to tunnel from a VPS to your server. This way your IP isn’t exposed to the public. You can also add crowdsec or similar on the VPS.
I do the same thing with traefik on my dirt cheap VPS.

You could try wormhole. It makes a direct connection.

This is the way.
Check out Immich Kiosk as an example for image frames.

Also Cloudflare adds a caching layer, often physically closer to users. Increasing speed of delivery and reducing server costs. It’s a no-brainer for server admins.
Also, I don’t work for Cloudflare either. The animosity is new to me, and certainly something I’ll look into.

I’ve heard a lot of good things about reolink cameras on self hosting communities. But anything that supports rtsp will likely be ok.
