I didn’t intend to suggest that Carl Sagan invented climate science in 1985, just that the political conversation has been clear and ongoing for decades (indeed, longer than 40 years), yet the opposing narratives continue to claim it’s unproven, and the progress remains insufficient.

It’s so easy to lose sight among all the gish-galloping nonsense around these topics just how long the problem has been almost fully understood and very clearly articulated. It’s absolutely devastating to think about how catastrophically the world has failed to meet the challenge he describes here in the intervening decades.

You know, it’s actually a lot more complicated than I thought originally. It is a satire account, and it isn’t a “real” place, but apparently a lot of the photos originate from a truck stop in Tennessee. There’s a whole internet saga around finding the actual location. Most of the photos they post are digitally manipulated in some way, including alleged AI face superimposition, but they play the satire so straight that it’s impossible to know to what extent. You may be right that it’s not whole-cloth AI generated, but it also isn’t a photo of a kid with a tub full of orange soda.

Since nobody has mentioned it yet, this is from Celina 52, which is a fictional truck stop social media account that uses AI generated images like this one to satirize rural American culture. Peyton doesn’t exist.

No, not trolling. I’d never heard that they had a policy against it until I looked it up just now.
Somehow I was under the impression that devs didn’t even get a say as to if or when Steam would put their games on sale. I thought I had heard that as a major gripe of devs who list games on Steam.
Now I’ll have to decide when I feel like it’s worth the remainder of my life and $35.

Does Factorio ever go on sale? I think I’ve had it wishlisted for over a year now.
- Comment on Credit scores drop at fastest pace since the Great Recession 5 weeks ago:
Not that there isn’t bias in the credit scoring system, but I don’t think anyone was having any trouble keeping black people from financing things before. Before credit scores, credit worthiness was just up to the opinion of the bank manager, who had latitude to be as racist as he pleased. Practices like redlining actually became a lot more difficult with standardized credit scoring criteria. Again, it’s not perfect, but it’s about as close to a fair system as we’ve ever gotten.

Yes, it’s voluntary and self-imposed by the game industry to avoid exactly this kind of nanny-state bullshit. Ergo, if governments proceed with the bullshit anyway, then there’s no longer a need for the ESRB or PEGI.

imagine Mr. Rogers stopping his show every 5 mins to sell you athletic greens and test boosters.
Or imagine the Flintstones advertising cigarettes to kids in the middle of the show.
Or comedy shows named after the sponsoring toothpaste company with sponsor breaks throughout.
Sure it’s gotten really bad lately, but mass media has always been rife with obnoxious advertising, both in-your-face and subliminal. The early days of Netflix streaming were really the anomaly as far as access to non-pirated ad-free media. The broadcast TV generation had their coping mechanisms with the mute button and eventually DVRs, but “media without ads” has basically never been a thing.

The craziest thing about all of your examples is that they weren’t even revolutionary. We already had Vine, Skype, and YETI cups. How the hell did they get everyone to believe that TikTok, Zoom, and Stanley cups were game-changing new ideas?
- Comment on zoomers are the new blooners 6 months ago:
Yeah, that is the joke. It’s kinda like The Pack type humor in that it’s mocking how out of touch the demographic that would usually make this kind of complaint is. Modern jazz musician culture is a whole lot of meta-absurdist humor.

Thanks for a lot of useful replies, everyone. Sorry I ghosted my own post for a couple days. I’m seeing surprisingly few people who actually use it used TrueNAS, so maybe that’s something to consider moving away from. I’ll have to weigh my options.

2028: Windows 12 is the last last version of windows you’ll ever need.
Tik Tok for Business©️ with Teams©️ integration opens at startup and can only be disabled in the registry. It will be reenabled at every update. Why not send a Tik Tok React©️ to your coworker for a great PowerPoint©️ presentation?
Tik Tok accounts are all converted to Microsoft accounts and are required at installation. You already have an account, why not consume some approved content? We’ll open this handy guide in Edge to show you how!
Just press Ctl+Alt+Win+Shift+T to open Tik Tok for Desktop, Bedrock Edition.
