I’m not an expert, so take this as far as you’d like — reading has real benefits to our brains such as improving vocabulary, improving critical thinking skills, and improving focus. I don’t think short form videos give us the same brain benefits.
Here’s an article from Piedmont health on the benefits of reading. I haven’t seen such an article for short form videos, but am open to it if there is one.
- Comment on Explain why the US bail system is not insane 1 month ago:
And republicans (or, at least one, in my district) are campaigning here on how cashless bail is letting criminals go free.
Cashless bail isn’t letting criminals go free any more than cash-based bail was. I am just as safe. There is nothing to see here, except a more level playing field for all.
Why do the republicans in charge hate people so much? I don’t think their constituents hate people nearly as much as the leaders.

3 months ago I cancelled Spotify, following yet another price increase. I went to Tidal for the 2 month trial, and another month full price.
This month I cancelled Tidal, following their deprecation of Plex integration, my finding a couple tracks with bad meta data, and some other here-and-there’s where the service was lackluster.
I’m current on Apple Music.
I like that Apple Music has lossless, like Tidal did. The Apple Music algo seems a bit better so far, even comparing to Spotify or the last time I tried Apple Music (~3-4 years ago). And, one of the things I didn’t know I wanted, music videos for my morning jam time, are better with Apple Music.
I imagine I’ll be staying here for a while.

I was an efficiency whore while working management at a big software company.
It sucked in some very specific ways. I didn’t even realize the impact until after I left that environment.
There were some good things from corporate America, too, but they didn’t bring real ultimate

Apple urges developers to not use DeviceCheck for anything beyond basic device verification, and if you’re a developer that’s also misusing it, then you should definitely cease that—there are probably more reliable ways to check whether it’s the same user trying to access an account from a device or not.
I don’t think I care about not being able to erase the device ID. It seems useful to have this, actually, for back-tracing if need be.
Snapchat probs shouldn’t use the DeviceCheck services improperly. But hey, that’s just like my opinion, man.
More, not very interesting, info on DeviceCheck services here: developer.apple.com/documentation/devicecheck

Poor advice, IMO. Going below BMR is ok, starvation mode is largely a myth, and, while nutrition is important, it is not necessary for caloric-deficit weight loss.

My thoughts exactly. I gain almost nothing with this design change, as compared to keeping the current or similar-to “bar” form and folding out from there.
I’m starting to have visions of Zoolander and his ridiculously small cell phone…
- Comment on If you take care of your parents or other elderly, how are you preparing to age gracefully? 6 months ago:
Maybe it’s just important to stay generally social with folks of all types, as perspectives and conversations keep us young? Is that a good maxim?
- Comment on If you take care of your parents or other elderly, how are you preparing to age gracefully? 6 months ago:
I think you hit the nail on the head.
Where you live is one thing, but how you face the world is another. As we age, it seems that we have increased challenges in the areas you note.
Trust becomes harder. Acknowledging our own faults and cognitive degradations becomes harder. Making decisions becomes harder. And desire to remain autonomous becomes stronger. Those things don’t jive too well.
One more thing to note though: maintain a community of similarly-aged peers. Otherwise, one might feel like they are on an island.
This is based on my experience caring for an elderly family member.

They might miss out on the convenience of AirPlay, though. AFAIK you cant do DLNA streaming to the Apple TV.
AirPlay really bridges the gaps for me, wrt having any app available on my tv at any time.
Combined with steam connect, it’s a decent multi use box with solid, non-intrusive updates. Just wish the garden wasn’t so unnecessarily walled.

Same reason a remote control is handy for a TV — convenience.
Motion or presence sensing. Timers. Virtual buttons. Physical buttons in places I wouldn’t normally have them. Garage door opening automagically when I pull in the driveway with a specific vehicle. Etc.
Plus I get to check in on my kitty from far away.

- Comment on Does matcha tea need to be combined with milk or can I use water? 11 months ago:
I prefer it straight with water, myself. Sometimes it’s hard to find places that will sell a straight matcha water. It’s important to use at least culinary grade if not ceremonial, and order your matcha from a reputable distributor.
I like Tenzo tea, but it’s overpriced. Enso or something like that is what’s in my cabinet these days.

Just trying to share a random screen grab, or want to say or ask something about it? Search for some Windows or Tech communities and post away.
Worst case Ontario, you get some downvotes.

I’m with you on this one, too. I prefer my jet boil and instant coffee (or matcha) compared to an Aeropress.
- Comment on Does anyone drink instant coffee anymore? 1 year ago:
Nespresso machines are definitely pressurized and temp controlled. Keurig, less so.
I read something somewhere once (great source, right?) regarding Keurig temps, and they weren’t consistent or optimal. And the pressure is more like a hose with an attachment as opposed to a pressure washer.
Some K cups will empty out when you use them, too. From what I’ve run into, that’s typically the fancy flavor ones. But some are just coffee grounds that get a suboptimal water flow at suboptimal temps going through them.
Someone can correct me on what I’m remembering though.

Yup, expect a residue if you delay removal. Painters tape is meant to be removed relatively soon after application. Rubbing alcohol can typically remove the residue.

Would the problem be solvable by saying Google needs to break from their approach (do nothing, in this case), and work with Apple to incorporate Apple’s tech into Android by default?
Just trying to think through the finger pointing that happens as we reel in tech.

Nothing wrong with a Windows box as your server. Use what you know. Windows skills are a great asset in the world.
This issue is OS-independent, meaning you would have the same problem on a Raspberry Pi as you did on your Windows box.

- Comment on I’m about to throw my entire Pihole out the window 1 year ago:
Irrelevant, unless your pihole is running on your DHCP server. Does the server running pihole have a statically assigned IP that is within the DHCP range being assigned to other devices?
Static addresses should be outside of your DHCP range, ideally. If you can’t change the range, and assuming sequential handouts of IPs from your router among other things, you can try setting the server’s static IP to a bigger number.
- Comment on Netflix is planning to raise prices… again 1 year ago:
FWIW, my Plex Pass has worked to be much less than that since I purchased it.
Much (not all) of the negative I see about Plex is associated with cost of a Plex Pass. If subscribing monthly, it costs more. If you play the long game with the Lifetime Pass, it’s dirt cheap and pretty darn solid.
