Maybe it’s just important to stay generally social with folks of all types, as perspectives and conversations keep us young? Is that a good maxim?
- Comment on If you take care of your parents or other elderly, how are you preparing to age gracefully? 1 month ago:
I think you hit the nail on the head.
Where you live is one thing, but how you face the world is another. As we age, it seems that we have increased challenges in the areas you note.
Trust becomes harder. Acknowledging our own faults and cognitive degradations becomes harder. Making decisions becomes harder. And desire to remain autonomous becomes stronger. Those things don’t jive too well.
One more thing to note though: maintain a community of similarly-aged peers. Otherwise, one might feel like they are on an island.
This is based on my experience caring for an elderly family member.

They might miss out on the convenience of AirPlay, though. AFAIK you cant do DLNA streaming to the Apple TV.
AirPlay really bridges the gaps for me, wrt having any app available on my tv at any time.
Combined with steam connect, it’s a decent multi use box with solid, non-intrusive updates. Just wish the garden wasn’t so unnecessarily walled.

I’ve just started a Zulip POC and it’s been decent so far. Definitely resembles Discord.

Same reason a remote control is handy for a TV — convenience.
Motion or presence sensing. Timers. Virtual buttons. Physical buttons in places I wouldn’t normally have them. Garage door opening automagically when I pull in the driveway with a specific vehicle. Etc.
Plus I get to check in on my kitty from far away.

I prefer to dice and soak in cold water first to get rid of that excess starch. Saving cook time is a win for me.
- Comment on Does matcha tea need to be combined with milk or can I use water? 6 months ago:
I prefer it straight with water, myself. Sometimes it’s hard to find places that will sell a straight matcha water. It’s important to use at least culinary grade if not ceremonial, and order your matcha from a reputable distributor.
I like Tenzo tea, but it’s overpriced. Enso or something like that is what’s in my cabinet these days.
- Comment on Starlink bug frustrates users: “They don’t have tech support? Just a FAQ? WTF?” 7 months ago:
It grinds my gears so hard. At first I submitted feedback, thinking everyone wants good documentation. Then I realized the ploy.
Also, chat bots. Fuck me for being able to think through the basics and needing real help, right?

This. I went back to my XLS because it’s much easier to manage and massage the data.
I did like some parts of Actual Budget, and incorporated them into my spreadsheet.

Hey, don’t judge a cover of a book by its look.
And check out Trailer Park Boys.

Just trying to share a random screen grab, or want to say or ask something about it? Search for some Windows or Tech communities and post away.
Worst case Ontario, you get some downvotes.
- Comment on Does anyone drink instant coffee anymore? 8 months ago:
I’m with you on this one, too. I prefer my jet boil and instant coffee (or matcha) compared to an Aeropress.
- Comment on Does anyone drink instant coffee anymore? 8 months ago:
Nespresso machines are definitely pressurized and temp controlled. Keurig, less so.
I read something somewhere once (great source, right?) regarding Keurig temps, and they weren’t consistent or optimal. And the pressure is more like a hose with an attachment as opposed to a pressure washer.
Some K cups will empty out when you use them, too. From what I’ve run into, that’s typically the fancy flavor ones. But some are just coffee grounds that get a suboptimal water flow at suboptimal temps going through them.
Someone can correct me on what I’m remembering though.
- Comment on What's the best way to run a temporary eth cable? 8 months ago:
Yup, expect a residue if you delay removal. Painters tape is meant to be removed relatively soon after application. Rubbing alcohol can typically remove the residue.

You’re making some big assumptions. That’s ok, though.
I appreciate the link.
I can sleep knowing Android friends have built-in safety measures, just as I do on an iPhone.

Would the problem be solvable by saying Google needs to break from their approach (do nothing, in this case), and work with Apple to incorporate Apple’s tech into Android by default?
Just trying to think through the finger pointing that happens as we reel in tech.

Nothing wrong with a Windows box as your server. Use what you know. Windows skills are a great asset in the world.
This issue is OS-independent, meaning you would have the same problem on a Raspberry Pi as you did on your Windows box.

- Comment on I’m about to throw my entire Pihole out the window 8 months ago:
Irrelevant, unless your pihole is running on your DHCP server. Does the server running pihole have a statically assigned IP that is within the DHCP range being assigned to other devices?
Static addresses should be outside of your DHCP range, ideally. If you can’t change the range, and assuming sequential handouts of IPs from your router among other things, you can try setting the server’s static IP to a bigger number.

FWIW, my Plex Pass has worked to be much less than that since I purchased it.
Much (not all) of the negative I see about Plex is associated with cost of a Plex Pass. If subscribing monthly, it costs more. If you play the long game with the Lifetime Pass, it’s dirt cheap and pretty darn solid.

Elder millennial here. This was said of us, too. I remember main framers sometimes noting this direction and poking fun.
Yet here I am and the world keeps chugging along in similar ways.
- Comment on Alternative ways to run Plex? 9 months ago:
Oh man, I just had the memory pop in of using Plex on my AppleTV 2 — had to use a side-by-side python script running on the Plex server to make it work. My, how far we’ve come!
- Comment on Alternative ways to run Plex? 9 months ago:
I’m a fan of the Apple TV because I’m in the ecosystem. Plex works just fine for me there. And I love that my Apple TVs don’t seem to rot out as fast as Android or Google TV boxes I’ve used in the past.
That being said, someone else mentioned the Onn box, and that thing seems to have pretty solid value. I’d start there, too, if I was trying something non-Apple.

According to the link in the top comment (sorry for caps, copied it out of the image): COOL AIR TRAVELS TOWARDS WARM AIR OVER LAND.
So the warm air does push, but it pushes upwards (rises). Cool, low pressure air, then fills the void.
This clarification brought to you by another non-expert in the field. Ha

I worked for a major (medical) company that would skip .0 releases, precisely to combat stigma and folks skipping it.
We did have one particularly bad release that we ended up telling folks to delay taking.
IMO, the real secret to most critical upgrades, and at the heart of skipping .0 releases, is to test in non-production, talk with super users and peers, and patch intentionally and quickly. If you have the resources.

While I can’t always get local-only devices, I can at least separate their traffic and block the shit out of them.
