In general, shared accounts/credentials aren’t recommended; each user should have their own account. Even in a homelab setting, the audit trail may prove useful in ways that are difficult to foresee.

In general, separation of privileges is recommended. However, the granularity should be informed by the risks mitigated. In an enterprise setting, more risks are generally mitigated by more granularity. In a homelab setting, there are diminishing returns. A risk assessment will determine the appropriate configuration in your environment, but in general, if the scope or severity of an incident wouldn’t be substantially lessened, it is better to accept the risk than to mitigate it.

That episode reminds me of the true story of someone who fell and hit their head. They were in a coma for a few hours or days. When they woke up, they were asking for people no one had ever head of.

Turns out, in that time they were unconscious, they lived decades of a life that only existed in their mind. The people they were asking for were their spouse and children.

They had to go to therapy to mourn the loss of people and a life that were only real to them.

I prefer 6th gen. Just enough graphical fidelity while still making it possible for smaller devs to make awesome games in a short time.

It sounds like your issue might be a bad ribbon cable, connector, or some other easy fix. Getting the display working might be doable with reasonable effort. If not, you can make it a:

Minecraft (or any game you like) server.

Steam remote play host machine. Let the laptop do the processing and send the video signal to a lower-performance client.

Load movies onto an external drive. Load emulators onto the hard drive. Use it as a media PC and emulation station.

Video editing machine.

Either way, make sure whatever screen you hook up to it has at least a 60 hertz refresh rate.

If you stream, a lot of streamers use a second machine to record, manage the stream, run the webcam, etc. allowing their main machine to prioritize rendering the game; you could use it for that.

Yes. There’s barely any difference between a console and PC components-wise and size-wise nowadays. With a current-gen console, you pay more money for fewer input options and exclusive titles than PC, plus the privilege of paying for an online subscription to game peer-to-peer on the internet connection you already pay for. There’s literally no reason to game on console anymore.

I started gaming less consistently so paying for Xbox live didn’t make sense for me anymore. I switched to mainly playing my PS3 because the online was free.

When Sony announced they were charging for online play, I bought a gaming PC instead of an Xbox One or PS4. At that point, the line between console and PC barely existed anymore. I already pay for internet, no reason I should have to pay again just to use it for gaming.

Planned obsolescence. Vertical integration. Planning to take all losses for the year during Q4. Layoffs in Q4 to pad the losses. Extended warranties (product support should be free). Mail-in rebates (just discount it). Forced arbitration clauses. Explicit opt-out data collection. Targeted advertising. Terms and conditions.

Surprisingly, George W. “Dubya” Bush gave a huge amount of funding and a sincere plea for countries to follow suit, on the basis that he was elected as a pro-life candidate and there’s nothing more pro-life than fighting malaria in Africa. Talk about doing the right thing for the wrong reason, eh?

Historically, Africa has only been exploited for its natural resources (mostly gold and rubber) by enslaving the local population. Once the resources are extracted, the people are considered useless and allowed to die.

Fighting malaria in Africa is the single cheapest way to save human lives, but we still don’t do it. Every nation regards Africa as a continent full of hungry mouths to feed because all of its resources were stripped away centuries ago.

No one cares because there’s no incentive to care. Every nation looks at them and says, “Why should we be the ones to fix this problem? What’s in it for us? We’re going to save these people, and they’re going to be so grateful, but what do they have to give us in return that we haven’t already taken?”

Africa is not a country.

Some of them, yes. My PS1 and PS2 see a lot of action still since I have controllers, memory cards, and a progressive scan CRT TV.

N64 and GameCube are both notoriously difficult to find controllers for. Even though I’d prefer to play on original hardware, when it comes to these consoles, emulating tends to give the better experience.

Idk if Xbox 360 and PS3 count as “retro” but they also see a fair amount of use, though not as much as the PS1 & 2 because about half of the PS3 and 360 games I want to play have native PC ports.

As for GBA and DS, I play those when I’m actually on the go; the rest of the time, I emulate.

I don’t own an NES or an SNES, but I’ll emulate some DKC pretty often for nostalgia.

Can you? Yes. Is it worth your time and effort? Probably not. But that’s rarely stopped anyone.
