Nice job articulating your arguments. Now that you’ve explained your stance, it can foster better discussion.
Since this explanation is so far down the thread, I suggest editing one of your more top level comments to include these points for better engagement.

Thank you for including sources, this was my point to AnonymousWolf.
I should have said “they may not be the same” as I didn’t check either. I stand corrected.

Why are you passing off the onus of proof to me or others in this thread? It’s your argument.
Just google ‘Good UX principles’ and you’ll see Lemmy breaks so many of them
No thanks, I’m also a decades long IT Professional and I’m not going to do that. It’s your argument so your burden of proof.
Lemmy breaks basic UX principles the UX is bad on multiple levels
Again, please feel free to cite specific examples.

I don’t have any data to back it up
That was my point. A number of times in this thread, you’ve stated your opinion as “a fact” or expressed it as obviously correct. It’s possible to get your point across without the condescension and acknowledging it’s your opinion.
I agree that the nature of federation on Lemmy and other federated social networks is complicated. Resolving that is no easy task. However, your stance in this post seems to be the burden of choosing your instance should be removed or streamlined by randomization. I personally disagree - while there is a hurdle to having to choose an instance and that is a barrier to entry, it’s also valuable in them learning that this isn’t just another platform under a single umbrella.

You seem to be conflating “the vast majority” and “people my age”. They are not the same.
You’re also making a lot of global UX preference claims in this thread without sources or data to back them up.

My wife had an iPhone XR. She loved it. It was all she needed. However it was only 64 GB and she ran out of storage. If it had an expandable storage option she would still be using it. Your comment is daft.
- Comment on Concerns Raised Over Bitwarden Moving Further Away From Open-Source 4 months ago:
The downside to Keepass is it is not self hosted, as in it’s designed to run locally per device. Yes, you can put the database file on a network and have multiple clients from different operating systems access the database, but you will end up with collisions and database issues. Ask me how I know.
Running cross platform Keepass (and it’s various forks) is absolutely doable, but it is not as seemless as BitWarden. I’m running self hosted VaultWarden and I’m hoping to run it for a long time as it’s much easier than Keepass.

The article mentions this is happening on the TV Youtube app. You’re running Firefox on your Android TV?
- Comment on Google dropping ublock origin represents a flawless David vs Goliath victory for its developer 6 months ago:
There are already other open source forks of Firefox that are community driven and maintained without employees or a for profit organization behind them. The obvious example is LibreWolf which describes itself as “a custom and independent version of Firefox, with the primary goals of privacy, security and user freedom”. There’s no argument that maintaining a web browser is currently complex and needs to make security first decisions, but LibreWolf as an example shows us that it is not only possible but I argue proves it will continue even if Firefox as we know it goes away.
- Comment on Google dropping ublock origin represents a flawless David vs Goliath victory for its developer 6 months ago:
You may want to educate yourself before spreading unnecessary FUD. Firefox is free and open source, and always has been. There’s no danger in Firefox becoming a paid browser because even if they tried, it would just be forked and maintained by another community or group.
Mozilla does have a for-profit arm called the Mozilla Corporation, and they manage the money received from Google and others. But that doesn’t mean Firefox is going to become paid even if Google gets broken up by the antitrust efforts of the US government.

Her account was likely compromised. It wouldn’t be possible to say how without more info. Could have been that her password was hacked (guessed), or could have been that her session was cookie hijacked where they wouldn’t have had to exploit the password.
I don’t know if IG has 2 factor authentication, but that could be something to look into. Also ensure the new password is not dictionary based. Use a password manager like bitwarden.

- Comment on Tube archivist + Jellyfin. Anyone have luck getting thumbnails and titles working? 9 months ago:
Thanks for the reply. I guess I haven’t had that happen to me yet with videos I’m looking for again having gone private.
I’m also not interested in crappy, privacy-invading, ad-shoving YouTube apps, which is why I mentioned SmartTube. In case you haven’t heard of it, it’s FOSS and has AdBlock & SponsorBlock integrated. It’s designed for TV use. If Tube Archivist fits your need though, that’s great.

I’m genuinely curious: do you re-watch enough YT videos that you need to archive your subscriptions? Or have I misunderstood the use of the plugin? I’m using SmartTube for TV YT content and it’s fantastic.

I have this blocked with Blokada locally on my Shield and can confirm it works great. I also prefer the stock launcher just without all the ad junk.
I recently bought a TCL TV with Android TV and I was hoping this trick would work with it but it didn’t. So if anyone knows how to make the TCL Android TV launcher interface “stock” and stay that way feel free to point it out.

There is no reason why this shouldn’t be on GitHub since it’s likely just a bunch of ADB commands anyway. In the Reddit thread the author repeatedly refused to acknowledge or address the calls to make the tool open source. No thanks, seems too shady to me.

I don’t think anyone here is blaming the users, the comments are saying they shouldn’t be surprised.
Users blatantly violate TOS > company bans account > shocked Pikachu face
I agree with the above commenter that they should have expected this. I remember watching SnazzyLabs video about Beeper when it was about to come out, and the video essentially said ‘people have been doing this for awhile, I don’t think Apple will care about Beeper’ and I thought oh yes they will.
Do I think Apple is in the right here? No. Am I surprised they’re taking this action? Also no.
