I want the issue of mass surveillance / data collection to be addressed, instead of this bs which is basically working around the edges the problem. Tick-tock shouldn’t be allowed to sell (/provide) user data to anyone but neither should Meta, X, reddit, etc.

No, they’re both bad.

What is the social security system was run by China?
That’s your great analogy. This is a social media company. Gtfoh
- Comment on TikTok sues the US government over ban 6 months ago:
It’s a bad analogy. Mass surveillance (continuous collection of everyone’s data) has very little to do with the number we use to track social security payments.
- Comment on TikTok sues the US government over ban 6 months ago:
We’re talking about individuals’ personal data stored by social media companies being accessible to others (governments, in this case). This has nothing to do with social security.
The problem is that the data is accessable, but that’s not being addressed. This is an improper fix to an actual problem, just facts.
- Comment on TikTok sues the US government over ban 6 months ago:
Access to the data it’s what matters, ownership is just one method of access.

CrowdTangle is Meta’s tool for election integrity, they’re shutting out down without a replacement.

- Comment on Algorithms instead of source code !! 9 months ago:
Being able to document the exact algorithms used to solve a problem is sort of a ‘Holy Grail’ in programming. Most programmers aren’t afforded the time to document to that level. This would require refining the code down to a single cohesive story that describes the functionality of the implementation. It’s great when you can spend the time on it, but the problem is that the code is actually “working” long before that point. Most employers want to stop paying for code after it starts working.

- Comment on I’m not a great programmer 11 months ago:
So, the question is, how do you deliver better code faster?
I think there question needs to be: how do we convince people that it’s “worth it” to pay for better code?
I get it, we all want to do our jobs well and excel in the craft. The problem i see here is that the stated need for cleanup, refactoring and documentation is immediately followed but a ‘but’. But there is no but, imo.
Code that “works” isn’t good enough, and we need a full stop right there and heads around the table nodding up and down in unison. But they’ll take the inferior POC build every time over investing in a “good” solution that incorporates lessons learned. Next they complain that it can’t be modified easily (“but, it’s just a simple change!”), and bemoan the state of software development.

I think once you’ve absorbed a bunch of data, it takes time to put all the connections together.

Pretty sure the interstate highway system isn’t terribly practical either, but with enough funding it can be done. Maybe saying every major city would make it seem more practical.
