Product ownership is going down the tube lately.
Microsoft is already planning on Project Helix (the next Xbox) being available without a disc drive. That’s why they’re letting you unlock digital entitlements on discs except where the publisher (e.g. Square Enix, Namco Bandai) has opted out. You can even unlock a Series disc in an XB1 (it just won’t play the game — unless you also have GamePass Ultimate, in which case you can stream it). So if you buy a Helix without a disc drive and Helix discs are available, you will (in theory) be able to pop the disc in a Series or XB1 and unlock the entitlement, then download it to the Helix.
This is possible because since XB1, every game disc has been uniquely coded.
Nintendo… not sure. They do cart and digital. I don’t think they have any new games that are cart only. Plenty that are digital only.
