no way anyone new is getting into this… shit’s been going for over 30 years now, since 1994.
That’s 1140 chapters across 101+ manga volumes… That’s insanity.
I said that, as I then read it’s only the 21st longest running manga series… there are 20 others manga series longer than 100 volumes… nah…

Right, and the “only 21st longest” part is its own kind of insanity. But here is some good news for anyone starting now: the ending already exists on paper. Aoyama confirmed he finished the storyboard for the final chapter years ago, just in case. So those 1140 chapters are heading somewhere, we just don’t know when.
