These are problems of masculinity gone wrong, says Ben Vasiliou, author of the new book Better Man: Reclaiming masculinity for good. Vasiliou, the chief executive of The Man Cave, which runs healthy masculinity workshops for teenage boys, points a finger at “outdated, rigid stereotypes” — “toxic norms” that tell men to be tough and stoic, squash down pain and fear, never show softness or weakness, never ask for help.
Better Man is Vasiliou’s contribution to what has become an urgent, if noisy, conversation about what it means to be a man, and at what cost (Vasiliou himself paid a heavy price for suppressing his true self; he recounts the deep shame and despair he suffered before coming out as gay in his late 20s, when he was married with two children).
