Context: If you’re first up the ladder in a medieval siege, congratulations, you’re the target practice. Defenders would pour boiling oil or water down the walls to make sure you didn’t get far. It was basically a very hot and painful welcome mat.

But if you survived the rewards were amazing, hence why so many were eager to go for it.
It started with the Romans and continued in later eras.
I mean that entirely depends on when and where. Not every culture is guaranteed to have done this or something similar.
