Four stars:
Jamaica Inn by Daphne du Maurier (1936) is a Gothic romantic thriller set in Cornwall in the 1820s. It's been adapted to film three times but I am most familiar with the 1939 version staring Maureen O'Hara and Robert Newton. It's also on a short list of books I swear I've read before but my book diary has no record of.
Mary Yellan has left her family farm after her mother's death to stay with her aunt and uncle, who run the Jamaica Inn. Even before she arrives she's warned away. The inn has fallen on hard times and appears to now be a place for criminals. Mary, having lived a hard, hand to mouth existence on the farm isn't scared away.
