Five stars (with a caveat)

The Skeleton and the Cat by Brandon James Scott (2026) is about about a black cat asking to be let into the skeleton's very cozy home. Reluctantly she says yes. What follows are five short stories about a bookish skeleton learning how to live with a cat.

The blurb and the social media campaign is comparing the book to the Frog and Toad books by Arnold Lobel. I wish it didn't. Frog and Toad are queer icons; they have one of the healthiest, most charming, cozy, adorakable relationships in fiction. Scott's stories are about the cat distribution system and about an undead person learning about life from a cat.
