I have the same question. One problem is that there is no unique identifier (e. g. ISBN) especially when they are pulic domain.
clew@ecoevo.social 5 days ago AIUI Project Gutenberg has a stable URI for each work, with an “ebook number” built in. And they keep old versions, when they fix errata, so URI and date should be enough to retrieve exactly what you read .
Maybe @gutenberg_org can refine this?
just from volunteering at Distributed Proofreaders I ran across enough edge cases inherited from the printed works to make a “Fallacies Programmers Believe About Books”.

I would add them manually as a new edition and set "Standard Ebooks" as the publisher (or Project Gutenberg or whichever it is).
@gisiger is there a reason that an ebook cannot be treated the same as any other book?
