Hi! I’m new here. I’ve tried Mastodon a couple times but maybe third time’s the charm! I have become increasingly disillusioned by mainstream social media and I’m searching for ways to connect with other people outside of an algorithm.
I teach high school English and I read a lot. Currently at book 92 of a read around the world project. I was a teen in the 90s and still trying to keep my grunge phase alive. I love art and film too.
Hope to meet some likeminded people!

There’s no algorithm so you have to do more work to find people, but also there’s no algorithm so you don’t have to endure rubbish from people you don’t follow :) hashtags are also big here and it’s possible to follow a hashtag rather than a person. That’s a pretty good way to find people.

It's a real change form algorithms. Follow @FediTips maybe, if you want more tips how this functions . There's also a website

this is a place where (ideally) you get out what you put in
find yourself some large accounts that post often (and share your interests) and connect with people in the comments
follow hashtags and search for the content you are interested in rather than expecting it to come to you
things can be slow to start, but the bigger you get the more momentum you'll have and cool content you will see by default
there are definitely a lot of millennial book readers here! grunge, art and film!

Just start following hashtags of your interest, post some with the right hashtags and you'll find people interesting enough to follow, making this place a good place to be.
