I was doing some research on mitochondrial DNA and and kept getting conflicting information on the entire orientation and direction of its circular structure. Some are clockwise oriented, some counter clockwise, some unify the L and H strand, some split them, some reverse the L and H strands.

Then I found out why. Just when you think there is a right and a wrong way to reference something you find out out why Andrew S. Tanenbaum once said

“The nice thing about standards is that you have so many to choose from.”

In the case of mtDNA there are three and apparently no one ever tells you which one they are using.
