As an school engineer my knee jerk reaction is to agree, but the truth is that an increasing percentage of the work for all the stuff we make is software.

I graduated as a mechanical engineer, but these days am the lead for a large Android project. Am I an engineer? Yes.
Engineering is about coming up with solutions to problems where the solution is not always obvious, and a lot of software work can fall into this.
If all you are doing as a coder is modifying the UI, or fixing a bug, this is not engineering. If you are designing the systems, you’re an Engineer.
