    So… paradoxically, I do think this is actually going to be better in the long run - especially if any weapons are actually dedicated to the defense of the entire Union, not just particular states. It would very much begin to level the strategic playing field between the EU and other major powers - that is, the US, China, and Russia. The US is clearly not a reliable ally, and recent events have made that fact blindingly obvious. If the EU doesn’t want to be carved of state by state into a collection of vassals, it’s pretty crucial that the continent begins to discuss and enact some very serious, not-fucking-around defense policies and shifts.

      Kicking out US bases from the EU would be a big step in this direction. They were established as as deterrent against Soviet invasion, but since the US regime is now chummy with Putler there is no real reason for them to exist besides as a means to destabilize Africa and the Middle East.
