Is it the best, hands down; or is it one of the best? The “hands down” implies that this one is clearly so much better than all the others that there’s no need to even consider them. And the “one of” immediately contradicts that by considering several others.
If you ever say “hands down one of” just know that i hate you.

I think it works in some contexts. LeBron James is hands down one of the best basketball players of all time. Is he THE BEST? Debatable. Jordan, Kobe, Wilt, etc… are candidates. But there’s no question LeBron is a finalist.

Hard disagree fam. The fact that there are candidates disqualifies “hands down” from relevance.

No, because Kobe is also a contender. It wouldn’t be relevant for, say, Detlef Schrempf.
