As someone who heavily uses Bandcamp both as an artist and a fan, I am still dedicated to the platform. However there has been a decent amount of enshittification recently - now they are pushing artists to switch from PayPal (bad) to Stripe (worse) for artist payouts.

Why is Stripe worse you ask? Well the first thing they ask you to do is give them full access to your online banking through your primary bank when you set up an account.

Ampwall was another Bandcamp alternative I had heard about. Although, Mirlo is federated with ActivityPub?? Nice.

    what’s the problem with bandcamp?

it was often mentioned as an acceptable alternative to spotify

They laid off the whole worker’s union and reduced the editorial team. It’s still better than spotify but you never know when they decide they need to remove more features to make more profits so it’s cool to have mature alternative if it happen

They got bought out by Epic (Fortnite or Unreal from way back in the day) and then got sold to some random sketchy American company.

I like Bandcamp, but a product-focused service must be:

      1. Not based in the US (preferably no Americans involved and unless there is public data that shows they are not into crime)

      2. Have a legal and/or technical approach that either makes acquisition by criminal types impossible or irrelevant

Strictly speaking, nothing really. But competition is good. Federation is better.

Strictly speaking Bandcamp was one of the best places to just buy music on the internet. It served for years as an inconvient counterpoint to shitheads like the CEO of Spotify who claimed there was no way that Musicians could expect to earn money from selling music in this day and age.

Bandcamp was a threat as an independent company to the strangling action being done on music by big corporations, and now it is not.

With this in mind, strictly speaking, I would say we need a new Bandcamp not owned by a massive corporation as a bare minimum requirement.

Hopefully this develops to be a real alternative in the future. Unfortunately, it seems to not really have much of the kind of music I tend to listen to atm.
