I’d write it down / take photos just in case… But also remember being able to swap SATA cables without anything breaking. It’s been a while since I had to fiddle with the hardware though, so that memory isn’t super reliable.

I’m pretty sure Unraid relies purely on the drive serial to identify its position in the array (or cache). From docs.unraid.net:
Unraid identifies drives based on their serial numbers and sizes, not by the specific SATA ports they are connected to. This allows for flexibility in managing drives, as you can switch them between ports without affecting their assignments in the system.

thank you! I had looked at the documentation but was unable to find that. I think to be safe I’m going to follow what @autriyo@feddit.org said as well. There’s no reason not to label them.
Which means, sorry future people stumbling on this, I will not be providing definitive evidence one way or the other on this.

Unraid 100% doesn’t care about the order / slots.
I had some USB-HDD adapters of various brands. If it wasn’t going to survive a move and re-arrange, it already would not have worked. In my case, some of the USB-HDD adapters passed through the drive serial numbers and some did not. For the ones that did not, I couldn’t have more than one (because it couldn’t tell them apart).

this makes me feel much better. I’m debating spooling it up on wifi after disconnecting it and piecing it back together.
