Daughter from the Dark is perhaps the opposite of a cozy found family novel.
This is a Russian novel, the universe isn't there to cuddle you.
The view point character, D.J. Aspirin (Alexi) is the worst kind of reluctant hero, a self centered asshole of a man.
Thankfully we are not meant to sympathize with him, but with young Alyona who is the actual adult in the room. and she and one of the neighbors demonstrate actual care for others.
