Explanation For Those Wondering: The Roman conqueror and dictator Julius Caesar’s last words are disputed. “Et Tu, Brute?” (Latin, “And you, Brutus?") is an invention of the English playwright Shakespeare, however, likely in reference to Caesar’s proposed last words in some sources of “Kai su, teknon?” (Greek, “You as well, my son?")
Caesar, like most educated Romans of his day, spoke both Latin and Greek fluently. Other accounts say that he had no last words of note, or that his last words were “Ista quidem vis est!” (Latin, “Why, this is violence!") or “Casca, you scoundrel, what are you doing?!” (noted as in Latin, but ironically, only quoted in Greek by a later historian, robbing us of the direct wording)
