Today’s game is Max Payne 3. I picked it up for sale today on Steam, and i’ve been wanting to play it after hearing mixed opinions. I know i probably shouldn’t have played it straight away with the other games i’m playing too, but i just couldn’t help myself and went straight for it.
My first impressions are that, Gameplay wise, it’s an amazing Max Payne Game. I wish i kept Max’s Armory on Command instead of the 4 weapons slots or whatever. But it’s all really fun too. I now have too watch where i lunge now to make sure i don’t crash into things to give it a bit more challenge. I can still lunge through doors and mow down the room, but i still have to be a little more calculated about it.
Story wise though, i’m a bit mixed on. I’m really liking the story, just not as a Max Payne story. The Brazil setting isn’t really doing it for me and it feels a bit more GTA Coded than Noir, at least until i detach it from the first two games. It’s a bit more serious than Max Payne 1 & 2, with what feels like a lot of the gags gone, but i’m still trying to decide if it fits the vibe this game is going for or not.
I did really like the Flashback sequence. It brought me back to the first game with all the snow, which is by far my favorite in the franchise so far. It felt so nostalgic (even though i only played the game for the first time last year) running across the rooftops to escape an army of thugs. This whole section has me really excited for the Max Payne 1 & 2 remakes as well (even though it’s being handled by Remedy instead of Rockstar).
Another section i really liked was the Stadium section. It had some really good Max Payne Narrations and i like making my way through the halls to reach the sniper. And then once i had the sniper rifle myself it was so cathartic being able to snipe enemies and watch them ragdoll down the stair, something that rockstar definitely does well.
I ended my playthrough today on Chapter V, which has you in this warehouse like area. I died one to many times and decided to take a step back and go play with my cats instead, but i’m honestly excited to get back to this game. The game feels just as challenging as the first two, without coming off as difficult for the sake of being difficult. I’m playing on medium right now, but i’d love to go back and do a hard mode playthrough.

This is pretty much the general consensus of the game overall I think. Good game, just not a good Max Payne game.

Yeah. That basically sums it up. Good game. I’m loving it. But if I’m in a Max Payne mood this is probably at the bottom of my list
