  Explanation: Ricimer was a prince of Germanic tribes who entered into the service of the Late Roman Empire. While many Germanic tribesmen served Rome loyally, or at least not less loyally than Roman recruits, Ricimer was an incredibly cutthroat political animal who betrayed everything and everyone he could in pursuit of ultimate power. Unable to become Emperor himself due to his birth and upbringing as a barbarian, Ricimer puppeted a series of weak Emperors, undermining and overthrowing them as suited him when they became too independent, regardless of the cost to the polity. The Western Roman Empire would fall four short years after Ricimer’s death by natural causes, Ricimer having done much to hasten its demise.

  Most relevant to the meme, he betrayed his lifelong friend and ally, Emperor Majorian, the last competent Emperor of the Western Empire, and had him arrested and tortured to death over the course of three days.
