Flora Sandes was a British volunteer who traveled to Serbia in 1914 as a nurse and ambulance worker. During the war she enlisted in the Serbian Army, fought in combat, was wounded in action, received the Karađorđe’s Star for bravery, and eventually became an officer. She is generally recognized as the only British woman to officially serve as a soldier during World War I.
