You can use sepiasearch.org to search across most PeerTube instances, and you can use NewPipe view videos too (you have to add each instance you care about manually)

I haven’t used it much either as often times the instances I would make accounts to would go offline on me

It’s a federated system just like Lemmy, Mastodon, …
(One of the) first step would be to find an Instance that you might like to join. joinpeertube.org/instances
Then, an App that can also handle peertube would be e.g. NewPipe - which is also a very good 3rd party app for YouTube and alike. newpipe.net

Me neither. The platform doesn’t have an app for that matter. I use YouTube instead just fine.

In terms of becoming a real competitor of YouTube, this is a huge step. Accessibility is a must.
