I like how they are going back to the original concept of “The Hellbound Heart”, namely that the cenobites are explorers of sensation. They are literally extra-dimensional monastics in a religion called “The Order of the Gash”, a term that could both mean a terrible wound or a coarse name for the vulva. These beings explore the extremes of sensation, a place where pleasure and pain are both indistinguishable and beyond comprehension. It’s also a “truer” dimension, closer to reality than what we think is the real world. Victims are lead to them out of boredom, not sin. It’s clearly inspired by Clive Barker’s experience with the BDSM scene, seeing people in those clubs at night that were bankers and businessmen by day.

Over time the Hellraiser property completely drifted away from this concept and towards the more boring and generic notion that the cenobites are simply spooky demons from a Christian hell, torturing people for their sins. Yawn. The original story and first movie are way more interesting than that. The more recent Netflix version was a good step back to the source material as well.
