We get to meet Licia this episode, voiced by none other than HanaKana herself. She has been with us this whole season so far, just hidden out of sight, singing the ED. I do think it is kind of funny how Ars keeps thinking to himself that she is some kind of villainess from an otome game. However, in the end, she is just another extremely capable person that is charmed by the ever hapless Ars. I kind of wish she had more of a villainess streak that comes out when it is needed. Like the kind of person that does Ars’s dirty work in the background. I think it would fit her pretty well (@rikka@ani.social):

You use the word hapless, and I think it’s a great call out. In some ways, he reminds me of Ayase Yuu from “Mikadono 3-shimai wa angai, choroi” (a manga that I and a couple of other users are really enjoying in manga@ani.social that has a rather…clumsy MC). At the same time, Ars has a capable ensemble around him, and leveraging the cast to tell Ars’ story (i.e. not letting Ars alone lead the plot; see Overlord for an example of how this can be done) gets us moments like this. Really looking forward to seeing more Licia starting next week. Now to hope the light novels get licensed, as well!

Yeah, I have said in previous weeks that my favorite part of this series is the cast around Ars rather than Ars himself. There are plenty of times that it feels like Ars is merely along for the ride in this story; being swept along by larger political forces and the forces of will that he has assembled around himself. I think the Overlord comparison is a prescient one that I hadn’t connected in my mind. One of the main differences of course is that Ainz is ultimately extremely capable himself while Ars…well, isn’t really capable in a comparable way.

That scene was hilarious!
Making her a “good hohoho” would be damn great, indeed. But I like how it showed that, even with all her ambition, she’s just a dreamy teen. Talented and capable, sure, but a dreamy teen.
