If I had the money, I don’t think frequenting conventions would make me less lonely. You got to spend hours traveling to the city to meet other travelers. I’m thinking meeting like minded people where I live, with physicality and frequency.
A stranger you meet a few times at a distant convention might as well be a internet rando on the other side of the world. It’s not a regular occurrence like running into your neighbor or co worked when touching grass.
If hot singles were in my area, we wouldn’t have the means or RNG circumstances of finding each other.
going regularly to cons you see the same folks and do make friends. you look forward to the next con and get excited when its close. you go to the board and look to see if your friends you met before are at the one and if they have arrived. but I agree with your other thing that they cost. even in better times myself and many friends bemoaned not being able to go to a con for lack of funds.
Never went regularly enough to build any relationships. Friends seem to have little interest in going any more and I’m too much of a nervous sort to do events like that solo.
my core geek thing is gaming so I go alone and hang out in the gaming room and maybe hit up the movie or anime if its slow. the gaming room is a natural place for someone going to the con solo as games always need players.

i’m confused now, the issue is there are no hot single weebs in your area?
are you a hot single weeb?
Neiche indoor hobbies + small town with nothing going on = not a lot of people with those interest, and they probably go outside a rarely as I do.
Meeting people online is fun but just make you wish you knew IRL relatable people you could casually encounter in day today life. Most my friends don’t really care about anime and there eyes bleed if I start talking tech.

sure, but you’re not really lonely, it’s that your socialization isn’t living up to your ideal of what it should be?
