I definitely used to feel this way, and I haven’t seen Rings of Power, so I can’t speak to it, but I’ve been steadily growing more open to the idea of people adapting the setting and building stories within Tolkien’s universe.

Boyens and screenwriter Phoebe Gittins expanded on Tolkien’s original story. In particular, they wanted to give a certain character her own name.
I don’t like this. This sounds like Rings of Power. I mean, I obviously hope I am wrong, but this already sounds bad. Tolkien wrote so much that hasn’t been adapted yet, why do we have to keep getting fanfictions instead?

I’m constantly in awe of people’s assumptions that Tolkien actually wrote a complete narrative, much less a ready to go to screen script, about anything beyond the Hobbit and LotR.
If you want a movie or game about anything in Middle Earth besides the events of those four books it is going to be an adaptation with a bunch of filled in blanks, and it’s going to have to change details because Tolkien’s notes are mostly broad strokes history that simply will not make an interesting film.
