Lynch’s Dune has a lot going for it: The visual design of the ships, and flapters, and in particular the Navigators Guild guys, how much he emphasized the preciousness of water on Arrakis, the assassin probe scene is great.
It is goofy in many respects though: The Alia subplot doesn’t work at all, the part of the battle where the space royals are sitting on their periscopes firing weapons, Gurney Halleck is pointless, Sting was awful as Feyd, Chani is useless (which is true to the books IIRC)

It did have one hell of a large budget so it definitely did visuals way better than sci Fi channel but it cut down this massive story into just over 2 hours so an unacceptable amount of cuts were made just to fit the cliff notes into a film.
