They are paired and, I think, exclusive (albeit with random numbers attached at the end so maybe meh).

Plopp@lemmy.world 9 months agoI don’t know… Usernames are paired with numbers, so they shouldn’t be all that exclusive and hence it shouldn’t trigger an avalanche of people rushing to get the username they desire.

I thought the goal of the username was to also have the ability to use Signal without any phone number at all

Nope, you still need a phone number. You just don’t need to give the phone number out to contacts you want to talk with and can instead use the username.
