kadu@lemmy.world 1 year agoSo by that logic, Linux Mint isn’t Linux - it’s a new operating system compatible with Linux apps.
The actual changes the ROM itself is got over AOSP are not that big - some of the security patches are just Linux security features that aren’t usually enabled on Android.
Having built in apps made by the project is great - and sure is a lot of work. No amount of built in apps makes it a different OS though.
The difference between custom windows builds and GrapheneOS is that one is buggy and broken and the other isn’t. Probably because Windows is proprietary and not designed to be modified, unlike Android.
Also yes, you can modify AOSP and call it a separate OS. Plenty of other projects have done so in the past.

Cool beans, but no comment of mine was about buggy software and your reply opposing my comment had nothing to do with bugs either.
Your comment said it was Android + half a dozen patches.
The AOSP camera has been forked with over 1100+ commits. Thats just one app. github.com/GrapheneOS/Camera/commits/main

Would you not call Ubuntu a different OS than Debian? And if you do, would you find it unreasonable to say that Ubuntu offers Debian app compatibility?
GrapheneOS and stock Android have a similar relationship.
