main problem is in the US the Overton window has been shifting in the completely opposite direction

Not agreeing at all with the guy you’re talking too, but I’d disagree. Generally, up until maybe 5-10 years ago, I’d say you we’re right, but more recently, progressive policies are becoming more popular and I think the window is expanding in both directions.
