Is Fandom no good? Should I avoid linking in future? Apologies if so.
Here’s a pretty good writeup on the whole thing.
Don’t apologize. Linking to Fandom isn’t some great sin, some people just prefer to avoid the site.

If you have to use Fandom for certain wikis, there are certain extensions like LibRedirect that will automatically redirect Fandom links to breezewiki, which is an alternative Fandom frontend without the obnoxious ads.
Fandom is very bad.
