This. Instead of relying on users to select a language for each post, there should be a language selected for the community, and the ability to filter communities accordingly.

I think what we need is for communities to be forced to choose a default language. Leaving it undefined by default makes the language filter useless.

We have the technology. Current analysis tools can detect language from text and via image-to-text, from images. /Said from my bed while having no coding skills whatsoever.

Fwiw last I checked (and this may have been fixed since, haven’t reviewed), the Lemmy software was bad about not providing any feedback when communities did this, meaning if people tried to post or comment with their defaults as-is (which back then was Undetermined as I recall), they simply couldn’t and Lemmy wouldn’t indicate why.
Due to this lack of feedback, I think many communities opted for undetermined to avoid confusing people by appearing broken. If I’m mistaken and/or this has since been adjusted to provide better feedback, let me know!
