It’s the cycle.
Cable basically had everything on lock. With broadband internet, they left themselves a bit exposed. New entrants to the market saw a chance to buy their way in.
It takes a load of dough, but eventually you win customers with low prices. If you can sustain the losses for long enough, you force out competition.
When the competition is gone, the they have the lock, and put prices up and reduce quality until they are making money.
