Comment on today I was reminded how bad YouTube ads are

While I think this may play a part, YouTube was unprofitable for more than a decade and probably still is right now. It’s not greedy to want to pay server costs

Directly unprofitable. They don’t make money off the service directly, but the massive amount of data harvesting they do feeds their ad algorithms elsewhere.
