MehBlah@lemmy.world 1 week agoThe first five digits of mine was a local zip code. Not quite my zip code but less than twenty miles away. I think they may have handed them out from the nearest tymnet node. There was a university there as well.

I remember using a program called “Neotrace” to find the general geographic area a user was in based on their IP.
That freaked people out in the 90’s.
