Balatro won indie game of the year in 2024 and multiple other nominations. This resulted in many other copycat games as well, best described as balatro like. Basically took the whole genre by storm.
Also the dev choose to not show up for the award, saying that he doesn’t want the public attention and infamy to protect his mental health, and this probably led to a lot more respect for the dev

Basic card or board game turned into a rogue-lite with the addition of collectible run modifiers, like the jokers in Balatro.
It’s not a difficult concept.

So it’s a card/board game with unlockable pieces. Why am I not surprised.
