the difference is iran is NOT iraq, and they’ve been gearing up for exactly this for 20+ years.

right, I totally get what you are saying, but the amount of people in the diaspora desperate for regime chang and desiring freedom, not continued life under an autocratic theocratic regime, is through the roof. It is also the same that the protest movement is huge in Iran.
If we were to view this solely through the lens of diplomacy, I would agree with you, but I am seeing it more broadly.

I agree with criticizing the war if it is purely about geopolitics.
Btu we also have to think of the perspectives of the Iranian people and the Iranian diaspora.
