You can change how damage is done. American style, or Japanese style.
What does that even mean?

In the American release of the game if you’re fire mario, and you take damage you turn into big mario. If you take damage again, you become small mario.
In the Japanese version if you’re fire mario and you take damage, you instantly become small mario.

Nah, my American Duck Hunt/SMB Cart turns you right into small Mario.

My pre duck hunt cart is the same. If you are hit when fire Mario, you go small

huh, that’s so odd. i have no recollection of that difference from childhood, and my ROMs don’t do that either, neither in the original nor in All-Stars.
they all perform the “Japanese” way

Yeah, that’s what I remember too, at least for the original SMB. I think OP is either misremembering or haven’t really played the original.
SMB3 did have that though.

Which damage version is implemented in the European version? My memory says Japanese-style for SMB1 and American-style for SMB3 - but given I had no idea there were regional differences, I may be totally wrong. Back then, Europe mostly got a version of the American version a considerable time later than the rest of the world so I guess it doesn’t really make sense the way I remember it 😅
