  • the Yugoslav wars
  • the Rwandan genocide
  • the assassination of Yitzak Rabin bringing an end to the Oslo peace process
  • the rise of the taliban
  • the Chechen wars
  • the Congo wars
  • the ideology of "the end of history"
  • the wave of rightwing violence in Germany (e.g. in Rostock, where thousands of people were celebrating as Nazis attacked and set aflame a house with more than a hundred people in it, most of them migrant workers)

      Totally depends on where you lived. My parents bought a house in 1983 or so for like $250k because it was northern Virginia.
