Comment on Soda pop
lps2@lemmy.ml 3 days agoI’ll die on this hill - no one calls everything Coke and those who claim so haven’t been in the South especially the area around Atlanta. “Coke” is used as an example - for instance, “Hey, can I get you anything? Coke, beer, water, or something?” Yes, they mean they have soda one of which is coke. No one would say, “hey, can you get me a coke” and mean Sprite / etc. At most, they may use it to mean coca-cola products but usually you’ll get a list of which sodas they have and are offering

It’s the whole “Is Pepsi fine?” Thing.
You ask if they have coke and they will say “is Pepsi fine?” Then you can say “Yes I’ll take a Sprite” and get Starry.
Like you can’t order a sprite without saying sprite. You cannot be like “I’ll take a soda” and expect sprite. Same with saying coke. You have to elaborate.
You could ask for a “coke” and accept any soda. But you’re not really calling what they are giving you coke. You just wanted any soda.
