Introduction to young users. Windows is popular because users grow up using it. Apple had the idea first furnishing school computer labs with iMacs. Various PC companies ran with that strategy and pushed Apple out of a lot of territory (of course that was a price thing too) and made Windows the first OS most students use.

With that said Linux has got to get easier for the average user to use.
