Comment on Common Desktop Environment "CDE" 2.5.3 Released After Two Years
mech@feddit.org 1 week agoIt’s an old desktop environment that used to be the standard for Unix workstations.
KDE and Gnome were heavily influenced by it.
And it’s still maintained and just released a new version.

do some people still choose unix or is it just to support legacy infrastructure?

Some commercial Unix systems still exist, but are being phased out.
BSD is also a Unix system.
However, this desktop environment also runs in Linux. Why people still use it, I don’t know. But there doesn’t have to be a good reason, as long as someone thinks it’s worthwhile to maintain it, it’ll keep existing.

OpenBSD people and those who don’t like “bloat” seem to like DEs like CDE.
