Games played, bet amounts, coin in/out (win/los statements), time on machine, good knows what else.

Why would an add-on be needed for this when all of those are tracked by the internals?
What special and unique features do these offer that do not come native to the device?

The statistics tracked by the machine are specific to that machine alone and do not differentiate between individual players. Without a separate player tracking system, the casino has no way of tracking the play of individual players, just the total play by all players on a machine.
