And, they are known as ‘digits’. That’s a clue for us.
And finally, there are 8 binary digits in an IPv4 octet.

Humans evolved with 8 fingers so that we would have 8 digits to do binary math on our knuckles. That’s what I do with mine, anyway. (I’m studying for the CCNA.)
